FAQs

  • Is my work kept confidential?
    • Absolutely! Your material is never shared without your permission! I am happy to sign an NDA if you provide one.
  • What type of edit does my book need?
    • I will give you my recommendation for type of edit after going through a sample of your manuscript. But you probably already have an idea of what kind of edit you need already – through feedback from your beta readers, your level of confidence in your grasp of the craft of writing, your goals in writing this work, and other factors. I’ll help you reach your individual goals.
  • What is your turnaround time?
    • Project length varies depending on the type of edit, the length of the book, and the amount of work needed. A full developmental edit takes at least a couple weeks, as it involves a great deal of collaboration and a few passes through the manuscript. For a copy edit or proofread of 50,000 words I budget up to two weeks.
  • What are my payment options?
    • Typically, I require half of the total project fee up front, with the final half due upon the return of the completed draft. However, I am open to designing a payment plan for each individual client. I accept payment via Paypal.
  • Will you send me a contract for the work?
    • Yes! Before beginning work, I will draft a contract that clearly states my services and fees so that there are no misunderstandings. We will both sign before I begin working on your project.
  • What is your editing method?
    • I use Microsoft Word with track changes. I can use Adobe Acrobat Reader for proofreading, if you like. I consult the appropriate style guide and dictionary (for books, the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed, and the Merriam-Webster dictionary) and I keep a style sheet.
  • What are your favorite types of books to work on?
    • I love variety in my freelance work, but I’m a big fan of thriller, fantasy, memoir, literary fiction, nonfiction books, and scholarly work. Those are what I most like to read (it’s important to find an editor who actually enjoys your genre!).
  • What genres have you worked in?
    • Scholarly essays, marketing materials, news articles, nonfiction novels, self-help (finance, health, technology, and more), and spiritual, as well as contemporary and genre fiction.
  • Will you format my manuscript for publication?
    • No, I don’t offer manuscript formatting. I work only in Word and Adobe Acrobat.
  • How soon can you start on my project?
    • I am usually booked one to three weeks in advance, but sometimes I have immediate availability.
